Engagement Photo Guide
When should I plan for my engagement session?
Choose the Right Season. Do you love snow and want a winter session? I’m totally into that and with a little planning we can make it happen. Do you prefer the color of fall and want an October session? Plan in advance because October weekends fill up quickly. It’s also a good idea to consider how you plan to use your photos. Do you plan to send a Save The Date? These are typically mailed at least 6 months before a wedding date, so plan accordingly so you have enough time. Ladies… it’s might be a good idea to plan around your next hair appointment!
What is the best time to schedule our engagement photos?
The best time to shoot any portraits is normally 2 hours after sunrise or 2 hours before sunset. This rule of thumb can be applied to any time of the year. If2 you are interested in a sunrise session, starting about 30 minutes prior to sunrise is ideal
What should I wear for my engagement photos?
Trust your taste and personal style… be yourselves! My hope is that you wear clothing that you love and, more importantly, feel absolutely confident in. I suggest that couples have two outfits, one casual and one that is dressier. Try to coordinate without being too “matchy”. Also, stay away from really tiny patterns, they won’t show up in your images and sometimes small patterns can cause distortion. I love bold jewelry, scarves, fun shoes, layers and fun accessories. Be mindful of the shooting location and choose your outfit accordingly. If your session will take place in the woods, consider bringing a pair of stylish lace-up boots and choosing earth-toned colors for the rest of your outfits. If we’re shooting by the water, a flow-y dress with bare feet and or a neutral-colored dress shirt with jeans would complement the location well.
If fashion isn’t your thing and you want to treat yourself to something new, try visiting a clothing store that will help you with styling. My favorite for women is Eleanor in Louisville (ask for Jill!). Acme is right next store and has some fun shirts and accessories for men. Pinterest can also be a great reference for clothing (and posing too!). If you're unsure about a color or pattern and would like our advice, don’t hesitate to send us photos of outfits you’re considering. I’m happy to be of guidance. If you’re unsure about what to wear, don’t feel like you have to make final decisions before you arrive at your session. We can have a look at what you’ve brought and I can offer some suggestions.
What about hair and make-up?
Some of my brides schedule their hair and make up trial before their engagement session. Be sure to leave enough time. Generally allow for around 2 hours. If you are in need of a hair and makeup person, don’t hesitate to ask and I can provide you with several. If you plan on doing your own hair and make up, leave plenty of time and don’t go too heavy on the eye makeup. Bring a brush and some lip gloss in case you need to touch up during the session. Guys should also think about how far in advance of their session they should get a hair cut. . I will be taking a ring shot! So if your diamond could use a little cleaning, that would make it really SHINE! Why not get a manicure done too while you are at it?! Your hands and ring will be photographed for your engagement pictures.
What feels meaningful to you?
If you happen to have a location that has a lot of meaning to you both let’s discuss if it will work for your engagement photos. Feel free to bring your dog and a blanket. Some couples like to have a little picnic before their session. Others want to go for a hike. If you have ideas for something a little more out of the box, I’d love to discuss them with you. Do you love breweries? Maybe we stop for a beer at the end and capture you at your favorite spot.
How do I pose for my photos?
Be prepared to hold hands, hug, laugh, snuggle, look into one another’s eyes, and kiss. I will give you guidance and help to create moments that photograph well and feel natural. Everyone looks the most relaxed and natural when they’re doing something, not just posing. I’ll give you plenty of cues and direction to help you along. Chatting, walking, dancing, piggy backs, hugs… we will keep things very fluid so that your photos feel fresh and fun. I also like to take photos close up and far away so that you get a variety in composition as well.
Keep it Simple + Have a Great Time!
I recommend shooting in one location, or if two keeping them very close. I’d rather spend more time shooting than traveling. Many sessions I do are all shot in one location. I like to shoot at locations that give us a good variety all in close proximity. Another thing I tell clients is to pack light and leave what you don’t need in the car.
If you’re having a good time, it will reflect in the images. So pick a place you enjoy, get dolled up so that you feel confident and great, and go have fun!
